Hazardous Material Removal Commences

50 years after the original building was constructed, work has now commenced on removing the asbestos containing ceiling and gable sheets from the previous Senior Citizens Centre prior to demolition.

In 1967 the Swan Districts Senior Citizens Association was formed with the original Centre at 12 Viveash Road. The new Centre, which replaced an original house on the site, was opened in 1973, with the rear extension opened in c1982.

Since 2015 the Associations Board had commenced looking for alternative premises, and later that year Council resolved to purchase the site for $1.76m to facilitate the implementation of the Midland Oval Redevelopment Masterplan,  with a two year nil lease back to give the Association time to procure new premises.

For many years the building was home to a number of groups, including the Sunshine Club, Seniors Bingo Club, Indoor Bowls Club, Swan Woodturners and the Cake Decorators Association.

On 31 August 2023 the Associations Board handed the property back to the City, with all the building users finding new homes.

Due the buildings age, most of the internal ceiling contain hazardous materials. While not dangerous if left untouched, removal must be done by licenced specialists. It is anticipated the removal will be completed in late December, with demolition completed shortly after.

The MasterPlan has identified the sub precinct as having a community and pedestrian focus, with the sites preferred use being hospitality and serviced apartments.
