Embracing the old and new in Midland

Catalyst, the eight-storey mixed use retail, commercial and residential building located on Junction Parade is the first building in the City of Swan’s New Junction precinct to open.

And it has on its façade a six metre sculpture by renown local sculptor Ron Gomboc entitled, Embrace.

The Middle Swan Gomboc Gallery Sculpture Park artist said the marine grade aluminium sculpture depicted embracing the old and the new.

“The sculpture metaphorically creates a thought of embracing the old and the new and it almost looks like two figures embracing one another one,” Mr Gomboc said.

“But embracing can mean embracing old and new, embracing nationalities, embracing anything where there’s two sides accepting one another.”

Despite being an internationally acclaimed artist with sculptures around Australia and the world, this piece is only the second on display publicly in his home region, with one other in Juniper Gardens designed by distinguished Western Australian artist Robert Juniper.
