Explore the hidden details of Weeip Park Stage One

Weeip Park is the key public open space in the transformational New Junction project.

New Junction includes the redevelopment of Midland Oval, the original sporting precinct of the town, and surrounding land.

Discover the subtle design features of Weeip Park Stage 1 which honour Midland's rich history and the people who've called it home over the years.

Overview of some key design elements

The central grassed space reflects the original Midland Oval, a reminder of the importance sport has played in our local community for well over one hundred years.

The screen wall pictures snapshots in time throughout the oval's sporting life, from cycling, athletics and football to highland games, dancing and log chopping.

The shade shelter is made from bicycle wheels, with a cricket ball and jersey numbers in the design.

The yellow and black colour scheme pays homage to the original Midland Junction Football Club. Nicknamed the Railways, they played in the WAFL from 1905 to 1910 and again from 1914 to 1917, winning the Premiership in 1911.

Earthy colours were chosen to reflect the local landscape, and locally sourced materials were used to create a space truly unique to Midland. This includes the classic Midland red brick, laterite gravel and granite boulders from the adjacent hills.

Structural steel in structures, sculptural elements and bollards are a hint to Midland’s agricultural past.

Local native trees and plants were chosen, including a grove of Eucalyptus Wandoo, and grass types are similar to the low lying areas along the close by Swan River and brooks. More than 80 trees were planted along Junction Parade, with a large Jacaranda also embedded next to the youth zone.

A striking integrated lighting system was installed along the grandstand and perimeter benches. The lighting colours are customisable for different events, including red and green at Christmas.
