Weeip Park is Founded

Last night, the City of Swan Council agreed unanimously to the new name, Weeip Park for the key public open space in the New Junction precinct.

City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said that the City is proud to unveil the new name of Midland Park.

“We asked local Aboriginal elders to help us name the new park,” he said.

“Weeip Park is named after the leader of the Wurerup area, an intelligent leader and fearless warrior.

“The new name passed unanimously at Council last night.

“We look forward to opening the park and celebrating the new space with the community next year.”

Weeip was the name of the traditional leader of the area whose boundaries extended from east of the Swan River into the hills. Weeip Park is the first dedication to this Whadjuk Noongar leader.

Now that the name has been approved by Council, it will be formally submitted to Landgate for processing.
