New Junction precinct turns 123 years old

October 21, 1901 saw the Midland Oval and Recreation Reserve – now New Junction - officially opened by His Worship The Mayor of Midland Junction, Dr William Elgee, with a commemorative tree planting ceremony and day of sports activities on the Oval.

The commemorative tree planting ceremony involved Mayor William and Mayoress Amy Elgee planting either side of the Oval’s entrance at The Avenue (now Junction Parade).

New Junction continues to celebrate its history with interpretation of its indigenous and sporting history. To learn more about the history of New Junction, including the significance of the street names, visit newjunction.com.au  New Junction
