2022 Environmental ART Project
The Environmental Art Project presented by Mundaring Arts Centre Inc. and the Midland Junction Arts Centre provides an annual opportunity for primary school children to creatively engage with local and global environmental issues, whilst developing their own positive message about protecting the earth.
The theme of the 2022 Environmental Art Project, Backyard Biodiversity, challenges teachers, students and parents to look closely at nature and discover, observe and monitor the animals that live in our local area.
Have you ever wondered about the animals that live in your neighbourhood? What are they? Where do they come from? Where do they go? What do they need to survive?
The Perth Hills, Swan Valley and surrounding areas are home to a wide variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, amphibians, fish and other organisms. It is easy to miss seeing the animals that live amongst us. They are good at hiding in leaf litter, water or plants. Some are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. Discover the animals that live in your backyard/school and investigate what they need to survive.
Now in its 21st year, the Environmental Art Project is open to all Western Australian primary school students in years 1-6, with all artworks entered showcased in a virtual exhibition. Selected entries from students who reside or go to school in the local government areas of project supporters, Shire of Mundaring and City of Swan, will be transformed into exciting public outcomes and displayed at theMundaring and Midland Junction Arts Centres. Both the selected students and their schools receive vouchers towards purchasing art and environmental resources, with additional highly commended and People’s Choice prizes awarded.
The entries that are selected from Shire of Mundaring will be printed on largescale banners celebrating their message about supporting Backyard Biodiversity and hung for a year in the Memorial Rose Gardens outside the Mundaring Village Shopping Centre. The City of Swan 10 selected entries will be transformed into a walking trail around Weeip Park to encourage visitors to discover the biodiversity of the newly developed park.
The Weeip Park walk trail, which has the banners printed onto large stickers, opened on 30 November 2022.
Below are the 10 winning entries displayed at Weeip Park.
